As project architects our focus was on program development, exterior revitalization, and interior renovation of the historic gas station into a modern food-processing facility. Our design intent was to make the vintage gas station character shine. Aesthetics were balanced between repairing the 60 year old details and creating a versatile buliding shell to accomadate multiple small business and non-profit tenants in the food hub. The exterior facade was updated with repair of original details by stucco craftsmen, new glazing, classic white buff white paint alongside modern fresh green reminiscent of the fresh produce inside. On the interior, brick walls were revealed and sealed with a mottled paint and brick look after lead-paint remediation. During renovation, we made a few surprise discoveries, including the existence of an old "colored" restroom. We brought the restroom up to modern standards, making it unisex and ADA compliant while preserving the vintage feel of those periwinkle tiles and exposed brick.
